Archi Romani

The "Archi Romani" in Acqui Terme, Piedmont, are impressive remains of a Roman aqueduct that supplied the ancient city of Aquae Statiellae with water. This aqueduct is one of the best-preserved Roman structures in Northern Italy and provides a fascinating insight into Roman engineering.

History and significance:

The aqueduct was likely built in the 1st century AD and stretched for about 12 kilometers to supply the hot springs of Acqui Terme. The imposing arches that are visible today served as support structures for the water pipeline and are a testament to the technical skills of the Romans. The remains of the aqueduct are located near the Bormida River and are easily visible from both the modern city and the historic surroundings.

Architectural features:

The surviving arches are made of sturdy masonry and are arranged at regular intervals. Each arch consists of multiple layers of stone blocks, precisely fitted together to support the weight of the structure above. The arches taper towards the top and reach a height of about 15 meters. The "Archi Romani" are freely accessible and can be visited from both the city and the riverside promenade along the Bormida River. A particularly good vantage point is the Ponte Carlo Alberto, built in 1830, from which visitors have an impressive view of the arches and the surroundings. The site is a popular destination for walks and photo tours, offering a peaceful place to experience the history and architecture of the Roman era.
